    Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Helsinki – Explore Porvoo

Upon arrival at Helsinki-Vantaa airport, make your way to collect your rental car. If time allows, take a scenic drive to Helsinki and explore the city. A must-see attraction is the Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991. Dating back to 1748, this historic fortress is conveniently accessed via a short 15-minute ferry ride from Helsinki’s Market Square.
Next, embark on a journey to Porvoo, the second oldest town in Finland. Follow the path of The King’s Road, an ancient travel route dating back to the 1300s that has been frequented by kings, couriers, bishops, artists, and armies over the centuries. Along the way, you will encounter stately mansions, traditional farms, quaint taverns, cozy alehouses, and historic inns that have welcomed travelers for generations.

Make a stop at Haikko Manor, once the residence of renowned painter Albert Edelfelt, and explore the 15th-century Sipoo old church. Upon reaching Porvoo, take a leisurely stroll through the charming Old Town. Admire the well-preserved wooden houses, visit the medieval church, and explore the bustling Town Hall Square. Conclude your day by staying overnight at a delightful boutique hotel nestled in the heart of Porvoo’s enchanting Old Town.

    Day 2: Porvoo to Savonlinna

Begin your day by having breakfast before embarking on a picturesque journey through the stunning Finnish Lakeland, passing through charming towns like Kouvola and Lappeenranta. Your final destination is Punkaharju, where you can enjoy a leisurely drive along the scenic Punkaharju Ridge.

While in Punkaharju, consider exploring the renowned Retretti Art Centre, a prominent artistic hub in Finland. Additionally, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Lusto Forest Museum, which showcases important nature reserves and offers an engaging museum experience.

Following your time in Punkaharju, make a brief trip to Savonlinna, a vibrant small town well-known for its annual Opera Festival. Make sure to visit the historic Olavinlinna Castle before settling in for the night at a comfortable hotel in Savonlinna.

    Day 3: Savonlinna to Nurmes

Today, embark on a journey from Savonlinna, passing through Heinävesi, to reach the serene and picturesque New Valamo Monastery. Your next destination is Joensuu, the primary city in the North Karelia region. Explore the vast Lake Pielinen and then venture to Koli National Park.

Stroll through the park at a leisurely pace, taking in the breathtaking views. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Ukko Nature Center and the intriguing ‘Pirun Kirkko’ (‘the Devil’s Church’), a 34-meter-long cave accessible via a marked trail on a short hike. Later, make your way to Nurmes, a charming town situated on the northern shore of Lake Pielinen. While in Nurmes, consider optional activities such as lake fishing. Tonight’s accommodation will be at a hotel in Nurmes.

    Day 4: Nurmes to Kuopio

Begin your day by indulging in a delightful breakfast before embarking on a journey to Lieksa. Here, you can immerse yourself in the rich history of the open-air museum known as Pielisen Museo. Following this, drive to Ruunaa Nature Reserve from Lieksa, where you can bask in the serene beauty of the lake adorned with rapids. This picturesque location is also ideal for fishing enthusiasts.

Continue your adventure by heading to Vuonislahti, where you can explore the renowned studio of Finnish sculptor Eva Ryynänen and admire a distinctive wooden church. Your next destination is Kuopio, the vibrant capital of the Savo region. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the iconic Puijo Tower for a breathtaking panoramic view of the area. For a unique experience, consider booking a lake cruise on the picturesque Lake Kallavesi. Conclude your day by unwinding at a comfortable hotel in Kuopio.
